Celebrating Our Past, Imagining Our Future Richard Tengowski, WMEA President

Happy anniversary WMEA! From its beginning as the Wisconsin Music Educators Confer- ence in 1960 (which would later become the Wisconsin Music Educators Associa- tion), the organiza-

tion has continued to exist to serve those who teach the beautiful art of music. For 50 years, WMEA has strived to provide professional development opportunities for its members, and those same members have touched the lives of thousands if not millions of music students. Just the thought of that is astounding! Congratu- lations to all the people who have made WMEA a tremendous success for five decades. WMEA is the “peoples’” orga- nization serving over 2,000 members. As the 2010 Wisconsin State Music Confer- ence approaches, let’s take a moment to celebrate our past and look ahead to the next 50 years.

When the time came to start planning for the 2010 Wisconsin State Music Confer- ence, the WMEA Executive Committee immediately latched on to celebrating the anniversary year, but there was plenty of discussion when it came to choosing a theme. Through the efforts of many WMEA members who offered their advice, a theme was developed that en- capsulates both the past and the future. The theme, which drives the conference, celebrates the history of WMEA, the qual- ity programs that serve its membership and the people who have given of themselves to help others and make WMEA a suc- cessful organization. While we celebrate our past, this conference also looks ahead to the next 50 years. We know that one of the key factors in creativity is the ability to imagine. This conference will provide sessions that will imagine the potential

future of music education and challenge our ways of thinking, allow for members to share ideas and network, and propel music education into a brighter future.

Reflecting on the many influential music teachers that I have had the opportunity to work with, I can tell you that every one of them was passionate about music educa- tion and they continued to learn, grow and nurture a love for teaching music. Take the time to attend the 2010 Wisconsin State Music Conference and celebrate our past, and continue to imagine what the next 50 years will bring.
