WSMA a Partner for Imagination Conversation

WSMA was privileged to partner with the Wisconsin Arts Board, Nicolet College in Rhinelander and the Lincoln Center Institute in New York to sponsor an Imagination Con- versation focused on envisioning a successful, creative rural community of the future. Over 100 people representing education, the arts, business, government and social services came together on July 27-28 to share the arts, creativ- ity and their vision for the small community of the future. Through the leadership of Libby Burmaster, former state superintendent of public instruction and now president of Nicolet College, Wisconsin is fortunate to be selected to host one of these unique conversations.

The Imagination Conversations, a project of Lincoln Center Institute and a part of the Lin- coln Center 50 Years celebration, run from fall 2009 to spring 2011. Many are hosted by state government, business and cultural leaders and feature diverse groups of panelists with distinc- tive perspectives and drawn from a wide range of participants.

The Nicolet College conversation opened with the premier of a new song focused on “imagi- nation” as composed and performed by Mario Friedel, principal at Ladysmith Elementary School and a WSMA Board member. Mario Friedel returned later in the day along with his wife, Sherry, and children, Vincent and Maria, to perform a song written by Sherry based on the vision of a “new Wisconsin promise” for education.

Also featured during the day were three rural stories of innovation in creating sustainable communities in Wisconsin by individuals whose imagination met with opportunity. These are real stories of existing innovation and success including The Wormfarm Institute near Reedsburg, the Northern Lakes Center for the Arts in Amery, Grandview exhibit and arts workshops near Hollandale, and ArtsBuild, headquartered at UW-Platteville.

This two-year series of conversations will culminate in America’s Imagination Summit, bringing together representatives from each state to Lincoln Center in fall 2011.

32 x WSMA Field Reps Contribute in Multiple Ways

Through the generosity of WSMA field reps, the Wisconsin Center for Music Education now has an automated external defibrillator (AED) located in the Les Paul Atrium. Donations of $800 were given toward the purchase of the unit with matching funds coming from the Masonic Foundation. Gregg Butler, WSMA board member, installed the unit when it arrived on September 1 and provided orientation for staff on its use.

Several field reps assisted with the annual spring cleaning at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education. They donated their time for washing windows, mulching the trees and also cleaning interior portions of the building. Also, two field reps assisted in researching music to be considered for the 2011 Festival Music List.

This program is composed of retired music educators sharing their time, knowl- edge and experience in support of WSMA activities. Through this partnership, the retired music educators continue to serve and stay connected with their music education profession. They have become an integral part of the services available to WSMA member schools, students and teachers. The field reps provide a variety of services during the school year for different purposes such as State Marching Championships, Wisconsin State Music Conference, State Honors Music Project auditions, WMEA Capitol Concerts emcee and volunteer opportunities at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education.

x WSMA Showcases at State Fair

Students had the opportunity this summer to perform as part of the 2010 Wisconsin State Fair on two stages for an appreciative audience. WSMA hosted two show- cases in partnership with the Wisconsin State Fair that provided students with an educational experience as well as an opportunity to have some fun at the fair.

On August 13 seven groups performed on the World Café Stage. Groups included Black River Falls Handbell Ensemble (Barb Olson – director); New Glarus Kinderchor (Kaye Gmur – director); Pius XI Flute Choir (Joelle Karth – direc- tor); Camerata String Quartet (Liz Deger, Leyla Sanyer, Kajsa Schneider and Michael Allen); The Unconventional Forces (Folk Rock Launchpad group); Half Mile Portage (Celtic Launchpad group) and finally the Pius XI Jazz Combo (Tim Karth – director).

The Marching Band Showcase was held on August 15 with an audience of over 600 parents, students and marching band fans in the Potawatomi Main Stage Grandstand area. Marching Bands included Wisconsin Lutheran High School (Patty Bailey – director); Wisconsin Dells High School (Marti Fults – directors); Markesan High School (Tom Winkers – director); Mukwonago High School (Tom Gaard – director) and Germantown High School (Jim Barnes – director).

Plans are underway for the World Café Music Showcase (August 12, 2011) and the Marching Band Showcase (August 14, 2011) as part of the 2011 Wisconsin State Fair. Those interested in performing as part of either WSMA Showcase should contact Tim Wurgler at twurgler@wsmamusic.org.
