WMEA News Jon B. Gilliland, WMEA Past-President Next Direction for Band

Keep your eyes and ears open for infor- mation and registration details regarding WMEA’s third annual Next Direction for Band workshop in Green Lake, February 18-20. “Next Direction” is a weekend camp-like experience designed to give current high school seniors and juniors working knowledge of what prospective school band directors are expected to ac- complish in college and university music education programs. Staffed by a nation- ally recognized band clinician, Wisconsin school band instructors and college music education majors, future music educators learn about music theory, appreciation, history, conducting, pedagogy and band program development.

Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education (WAME) An important aspect of WMEA’s strategic plan involves advocating for music edu- cation programs in Wisconsin’s schools. For the last two years as past-president, Rich Tengowski has led the efforts of revitalizing this working group with the development of a new handbook and a reinvigorated look on the WAME web pages.

Over the past several years, music teach- ers – and others concerned about the delivery of quality music programs to children – have come to rely on WAME for leadership, information, materials and

suggestions for maintaining and improv- ing music education in Wisconsin. With President-Elect Leyla Sanyer as chair, this “working group” will continue to be an integral and effective aspect of WMEA programs and projects.

Policy Committee

The WMEA Executive Committee estab- lished an ad hoc “Policy Committee” to examine current policies and procedures with the goal of assuring that WMEA operations are “in sync” with all board decisions and directives. Thanks to the tediously hard work of Lynn Seidl and Lisa Benz, this review will assist WMEA in bringing all practices up to date and indicating where it is necessary to realign policies and operations.

MENC National Assembly

Rich Tengowski, Mike George and Jon Gilliland represented Wisconsin and WMEA at the MENC National Assembly held in Washington, D.C. June 26-29. Assembly delegates took part in arts advocacy training, met with members of Wisconsin’s congressional delegation and participated in discussions and decisions regarding MENC policy, governance and programs. As part of the North Central Division, WMEA leadership also met with colleagues from the upper Midwest to discuss mutual support and to share ideas concerning programs and policies that affect music and music education in the region.

WMEA Emerging Leaders Academy In July, a cadre of young music educators who are in their first three to four years of teaching met at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education to learn about the oppor- tunities and programs available for them to serve the profession. These individuals, each of whom was recommended by the regional vice presidents, were invited to attend this two-day workshop to take part in experiences that will lead to their ac- tive – and energetic – participation (and future leadership) in WMEA and WSMA programs.

Based on the quality of the participants involved in the academy, it was noted that Wisconsin students are being taught by some very farsighted and energetic young music educators. Mike George and Jon Gilliland headed up this workshop.

WMEA Listening Project

Watch for new information about WMEA’s long-standing Listening Project. In July, the WMEA Executive Board approved the inclusion of fourth grade students in this exciting program for the coming year. Teachers now are able to add another grade level to the listening project experi- ence in their schools.
