listening project
theme this year is “DANCE! DANCE!! DANCE!!!” and will use compositions from the 2004-05 project.
Image Our Future – My goal for the future of this project is that it will motivate and inspire all music teachers to realize the importance of teaching their students to be attentive, active music listeners, who can appreciate and understand the beauty of all genres of music. We already have made some exciting changes in our project. The focus of the Listening Project is “Listening Activities for All Ages” and we have designed lessons geared toward grades K-8. Also new this year, we are very excited that the WMEA Board ap- proved making fourth grade students eligible for the festival. They will have a separate festival with the basic questions and only four transfer questions. I hope that you share the listening material with all of your students, but hopefully adding the fourth grade festival will get them excited about music listening experi- ences and motivated to learn about all the great music available to them. In the past, compositions were available on CD, now we have a site on iTunes where you can purchase and download the pieces on the list for $10. Students will also have this opportunity to download their own copy. If you do not have access to iTunes and
would rather just buy the CD, WMEA will have it available for $12, plus shipping.
I know my goal for the future is lofty, and only you can make it a reality. If you are interested, but have some questions, there is a session on the Listening Project at 8 a.m. Friday, October 29 at the Wisconsin State Music Conference. The committee will also be hosting an elementary/middle school Sharefair after the session from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. See the conference program for specific details. I encourage you to at- tend the state conference. There are many fabulous sessions and it is a great way to get and share ideas to strengthen both you as an educator and your music program.
I hope you will accept my invitation and give this fantastic project a try. It will give you and your students many hours of listening excitement, and fun. Do it for yourself, your music program and your school, but most of all, for those students “whose only contact with music in their adult life will be as listeners.” I look for- ward to working with and for you. You can contact me by phone at (715) 425-1815 or by email at the address listed below.
