College significantly invests in redevelopment

An investment of over three quarters of a million pounds has been made by Burton College to transform the ground floor reception area of its Lichfield Street campus.

The £760,000 project, which will see the current foyer, library, learner services and open learning spaces redeveloped, will create a modern, self-contained Learner Hub designed to enhance and further develop students’ learning experiences, offering easy and convenient access to a wide range of support services. Featuring a glass ceiling and a

cantilevered roof and furnished with bright, contemporary furniture, the 900 square metre space is to be transformed into a light and airy area, divided into a combination of open-plan and closed off office spaces accommodating advice and guidance, counselling, financial support, reprographics, enrolment and marketing facilities, whilst several learner pods will house computers for the completion of administrative tasks such as the completion of UCAS forms. In addition, a new reception and foyer will house meeting rooms, toilets, a first aid room and visitor waiting area together with thirteen 40” plasma television screens, which will be sited on the walls for the

communication of news and information. All amenities will be compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act as part of the College’s initiative to widen accessibility to

all groups of the community. The project has been designed in conjunction with Chartered Building Surveyors CTG Surveyors Ltd and is being constructed by Derby based contractor GF Tomlinson. Having commenced in July, building work is expected to be finished for when students return in early September. Commenting on the redevelopment College Principal & Chief Executive Dawn Ward OBE said, “This is both a very exciting project for the College and a significant investment, which our success has enabled us to self-finance, which will greatly enhance the learning experience of our students. The creation of a dedicated Learner Hub will ensure that everyone will have access to a wide range of support services in one, convenient place, which is open when students need it. This redevelopment very much supports our plans and vision for the future, adding to the College’s inspiring and stimulating environment to create a flexible, vibrant and outstanding campus providing excellence for all of our communities and creating the skills of tomorrow, today.” Managing Director of GF Tomlinson, Andy Sewards commented: “We are delighted to be working alongside Burton College once again to deliver this improved facility that will enhance the students’ learning experience.” CTG Surveyors Ltd are a firm of Chartered Building Surveyors and Architectural Designers who have fifteen years experience working in the educational sector with particular expertise in Further Education and Higher Education, specialising in fast track refurbishment solutions and providing a full range of
