Clamp-on

The non-invasive and time saving advantages of clamp-on energy meters are starting to catch the eye of many more customers, says Martin Wardell, managing director of leading independent meter supplier, MWA Technology.

energy meters gaining favour

“Our Dynasonics clamp-on meters are fulfilling many vital needs within water, energy, chemical and sewage applications. As a result, clamp-on meters are one of our fastest growing products at the moment,” explains Wardell.

“The meters, which measure the fluid velocity of liquid within a closed conduit, are very quick and easy to install saving time and labour costs. Another key benefit is that they are simply bolted on to the existing pipe with no need to cut or stop the flow of liquid, avoiding wasteful downtime.

“Flow rates are accurately calculated through sender and receiver devices that use ultrasound transmission and clever electronics to measure the energy being used,” concluded Martin Wardell. Tel: 0121 327 7771,

Time to c:sense on carbon

Facility managers are being offered impartial energy advice “for the real world” by energy experts in a cost-cutting, carbon reduction campaign that could save jobs. An army of energy champions is being recruited by energy efficiency specialists c:sense to help link carbon sense to commercial and common sense. It is running survival courses with ongoing support to the facility managers, who it describes as ‘Britain’s natural energy champions’.

“They are the people running buildings, in charge of energy bills and office structures, who want to secure a low carbon future, but don’t always know how best to act,” said spokesman David Parsons.

“Many are worried about spiralling energy bills and perplexed by political directives on carbon. Some are mis-sold costly, unsuitable products and technologies. Most need help to persuade the board to make carbon reduction a priority.

“We are inviting them to join our campaign, along with their financial directors, and share our self-help methods to secure ten per cent energy cuts and continuing cost savings, just from changes to practices, attitude and culture. That outcome will make board directors see sense.”

“A ten per cent saving here could enable struggling organisations to save skilled workers whose jobs are currently under the axe”, he added.

He said that c:sense was offering a programme of reality checks in the new low carbon economy and was the brain- child of “hard-boiled inspectors with many years experience in running energy surveys and

independently verifying CO2 emissions.

“There is a lot of confusion about carbon- cutting and we want to

educate people

to monitor and control what they can actually measure. They can measure energy savings, and the amount of energy leaking out of a building, but at present it is impossible to accurately measure an organisation’s carbon footprint.” The Energy Champion’s Survival course covers practical energy savings tips, ways to meet government targets and building regulations, and advice on staff motivation. Red Solar will help property owners achieve a return on investment of up to 8% PA

Property owners looking for a return on capital investment of as much as 8% per annum will welcome the formation of Red Solar Ltd, a new company specialising in the design, supply and installation of complete solar energy photovoltaic (PV) solutions.

PV modules – which generate ‘free’ electricity from daylight – allow the owner to benefit from the government’s Feed-In Tariff Scheme which encourages businesses to invest in low-carbon electricity generating systems by paying them for the energy they produce. Payments offer a substantial premium on normal electricity costs.

The rate of return of between 5-8% per annum (Department of Energy & Climate Change figures) is guaranteed by the government and index-linked for 25 years. In effect, the Feed-in Tarrif has the capacity to transform buildings and offices from an expensive overhead into a valuable new income stream.

Importantly, PV installations – which can be easily sited on pitched roofs, flat roofs and canopies or built into façades – will not

only result in substantially reduced energy bills today, but will also safeguard property owners against rapidly rising energy costs in the future.

In the current economic climate, lower energy costs represent an inducement that will be attractive to building owners and tenants alike so Red Solar is expecting a high level of interest.

Red Solar Ltd is part of the Red Group of Companies which has been in business for 35 years. Based in Milton Keynes, Red Solar operates across the UK and can provide clients with a complete ‘turnkey’ PV

package covering everything from the initial feasibility study right through to design,

installation and commissioning. Although PV systems are

virtually maintenance-free, Red Solar offers clients complete peace of mind through a no-quibble after-sales service for the life of the installation, typically estimated at over 40 years.
