Crossgrip weathers the storm

Slips and falls from height are a central feature of the Health & Safety Executive’s current Shattered Lives campaign. As a result, Crossgrip safety matting is increasingly being used as a safe, all- weather and easy-to-lay solution for flat roofs, gantries and high level areas. Crossgrip not only provides safe and slip resistant walkways but also protects the integrity of flat roof membranes. Manufactured in a 14mm thick open grid, it helps to maintain visible and dry walkways above areas where water collects. The flexibility of the matting means it will contour over uneven surfaces or rough surfaces. The matting’s PVC composition is

resistant to bacterial growth and impervious to all weather conditions, including frost, ice and snow, thereby providing a permanent slip resistant walkway. Crossgrip’s open grid welded roll construction makes it maintenance free and stable in winds of up to 150km/h. However, optional connecting loops are available for exposed areas likely to be subjected to greater wind forces. Crossgrip is supplied in 10m rolls and widths of 60, 91 and 122cm. It is available in black and light grey with other colours available to order. Information and samples of are available from Plastic Extruders Ltd. Tel: 01268 571116 or visit www.crossgrip.com

Kilfrost launch to change face of winter safety planning

A recently launched new product is set to revolutionise the way public areas are kept safe from snow and ice, by allowing local authorities and private companies to prepare for the worst in good time. North East-based Kilfrost has developed its innovative Ice Melt products as vital tools in the fight against winter weather related accidents. “Preparing for the worst is always good health and safety practice, but when it comes to winter safety in the past it’s often been the case that public areas can only be treated after snow or ice has formed” explained Kilfrost’s Chief Executive Gary Lydiate.

“Not only does this put pressure on the teams on the ground, but it leaves a window of opportunity for accidents to happen. Now, thanks to the launch of Ice Melt, it’s possible to prepare public areas like walkways, bridges, playgrounds and car parks to make sure that pedestrians,

students, shoppers and other members of the public are kept safe straight away” he added.

The Ice Melt product has been developed following over 75 years experience in pioneering specialist de-icing and anti-icing fluids for the aviation and rail sectors across the world. “Kilfrost are global leaders and are proud to continually invest in research and development to make sure that our products are the very best, most efficient and cost effective as possible” explained Gary.

Ice Melt is a clean formulation product which is completely soluble so avoids the messy residue left behind by traditional rock salt. This removes the need to clean up afterwards so also has potential cost and labour saving benefits. Fully biodegradable, the product is not harmful to humans, animals or vegetation, making it ideal for sensitive settings like hospitals and schools. It’s also significantly less corrosive than rock salt so can be applied near metal—a factor which is already proving popular across the rail industry in particular.

Designed for the ultimate ease of application, Kilfrost Ice Melt is available in three formulations — granules, pellets and liquid—to suits every client’s needs. All super-fast performance, they offer excellent coverage and proven efficiency. New common sense guides to portable appliance testing

Seaward has introduced two free booklets providing guidance for companies, organisations and contractors involved in workplace electrical safety testing.

The new publications are specifically intended to help those involved understand how electrical health and safety obligations can be fulfilled in a realistic and cost effective manner and without the need for unnecessary or over excessive inspection and testing regimes.

The first new booklet in the series, ‘A Common Sense Approach to Electrical Safety Testing in the Workplace’, is aimed at companies and organisations that utilise or commission portable appliance testing services. The booklet describes the importance of establishing inspection and testing measures that are appropriate to each particular environment or workplace and which are in keeping with the specific risks posed.

The other publication in the series is aimed at the contractor or individual planning to establish a safety testing business offering PAT testing services. As well as providing guidance on the appropriate legislation and other test matters, the Responsible Business Builder booklet also specifically emphasises the importance of a professional and common sense approach in helping clients to assess the risk they face in the work place. Further details of these booklets are available from www.seaward.co.uk or by telephoning 0191 587 8708.
