Fire ravaged school re-opened after just 13 weeks

A school in Doncaster was able to re- open just 13 weeks after 90 per cent of its buildings were destroyed in a devastating fire. The Portakabin rapid-response team built an entire 6,000sqm interim school for 800 pupils and staff at Campsmount Technology College, in only 10 weeks. As an emergency measure, staff and pupils had to be relocated to different locations across the community following the fire. The speed of the Portakabin hire solution was therefore critical to minimising the impact of the fire on the young people’s education.

Working weekends and in adverse weather conditions, Portakabin configured 179 steel-framed modules to meet the school’s exact requirements, which were installed to form 21 buildings. These provided teaching facilities of the highest standards to get the school up and running again, including a dining hall and catering kitchen, 20 general classrooms, science laboratories, art and technology rooms, six ICT suites, sports changing rooms,

administration unit, lecture theatre, seminar rooms and toilet blocks. The new interim school is providing a

high quality learning environment until the site can be redeveloped. The buildings are located on a sports field so Portakabin also had to install all necessary drainage, foundations, tarmac, electrical substations, and a temporary car park, as well as access ramps and steps, fire and intruder alarms, air conditioning, data connections and fitting out.

To view a video of the interim school’s construction, see

www.portanews.co.uk/campsmount. Commenting on the project, Andrew Sprakes, Head Teacher at Campsmount Technology College, said, “We are all stunned and delighted at what has been achieved here — teaching accommodation of the highest standard, delivered in such a short timescale, and in very challenging working conditions.”

“We can’t speak highly enough of the Portakabin team. They worked at break- neck speed to get our school up and running again. The quality and finish of the buildings, how they’ve been set up and organised, and the size of the classrooms is all excellent. It has surpassed all our expectations.”

In emergency situations, such as following a fire or flooding, or last minute changes to pupil intake, schools and local authorities need an assurance that their building needs will be met — on programme, without unforeseen costs and with no compromise on quality. Building Excellence Award for UK’s largest complete hospital to be built off site

Award-winning off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has won an LABC Building Excellence Award for the Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre in Bristol.

The project for independent healthcare providers UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH) is believed to be the largest complete hospital to be built off site.

The team responsible for the centre’s design and construction won the LABC Building Excellence Award for the Best Community Building in the West of England.

The LABC Awards recognise and reward the best quality design, construction, and project management. The finalists are acknowledged to be among the very best projects in the region. Commenting on the award, Jane Cameron, Building Control Officer at South Gloucestershire Council, said, “This is an excellent healthcare building that successfully demonstrates an innovative approach to construction. The use of off- site construction shortened the build time, improved site efficiency, and reduced site waste and traffic. The Yorkon site was very well managed throughout, with excellent workmanship, outstanding communications, and a positive commitment to the health and safety of everyone working on the project.” Designed by architects TP Bennett, Emersons Green is a new purpose-built surgical hospital which provides a range of elective surgical services, including inpatient treatment to NHS patients. The three-storey 4,842sqm building was manufactured off site in York and comprises 114 steel-framed modules, which Yorkon craned into position in just three weeks to reduce disruption, and the build time to only eight months.

Building & Facilities Management – September 2010

The treatment centre has a number of sustainable features including services monitoring, water conservation devices, a high level of natural light, solar reflective glass, leak detection system for the kitchen, cycle storage, and a green roof to the adjacent service building.

Externally it is clad in horizontal cedar with areas of terracotta, render and aluminium rainscreen cladding to contrast with the white steel modules and the glazed atrium.

Facilities in the new treatment centre include four operating theatres with recovery bays, central sterilisation unit, minor operations room, endoscopy suite, diagnostics and x-ray, 33 inpatient beds, procedure and consulting rooms, waiting area, reception, café, pharmacy, physiotherapy and administration centre. The Emersons Green contract follows Yorkon’s successful completion in 2005 of its first project for UKSH – the Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre. That scheme also delivered on time and on budget, manufactured and fitted out in just 10 months, and is now regarded as one of the UK’s top performing independent sector treatment centres. www.yorkon.info
