AFS Global Technology Series Includes Heat Treatment Theory and Practice The third installment of the AFS
Important elements in the ferrous
Global Technology Series, Heat Treat- ment Theory and Practice, will be held May 26-27 at AFS headquarters, Schaumburg, Ill. Two hands-on workshops will be held
concurrently—one each for ferrous and nonferrous participants. The workshops are intended to provide an understanding of the basic principles of thermal treat- ment as well as best heat treating practices for ferrous and nonferrous castings.
AFS announced the signing of a mem- orandum of agreement with the U.S. Automotive Materials Partnership LLC (USAMP), making the data contained in USAMP’s Automotive Lightweight Materials database available to AFS for inclusion in the AFS online database
session will include thermal treat- ment (normalizing, stress relieving, annealing, austempering) surface hardening methods, auditing heat treating sources, differences in heat treating iron and steel castings, and applications of heat treated cast irons and competitive materials. The nonferrous session will cover increasing tensile strength, maximiz- ing elongation, which aluminum

alloys meet strength requirements without heat treating, minimizing distortion, improving hardness and machining performance, and discovering the optimum heat treat cycle for each alloy or component geometry. Both workshops will include round-
table discussions. Attendees are encour- aged to bring heat treating questions, problems and concerns for discussion and problem solving.

Richard McCormick to Speak on Manufacturing at
Government Affairs Conference Richard McCormack, trade policy
expert, author and editor of Manu- facturing & Technology News, will deliver opening remarks on the state of U.S manufacturing and recent actions taken by the Obama Ad- ministration and Congress to assist the domestic manufacturing base at the 2010 Metalcasters Alliance for Government Affairs Conference. The annual conference, cosponsored by AFS and the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA), will be held May 5-7 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Washington, D.C. As a Washington, D.C. based journal-
ist, McCormack has covered science, technology and government for more than 20 years, specializing in economic competitiveness and globalization. Important topics included at this
year’s conference will be economic recovery, climate change, tax policy, safety and health matters, and access to credit. Following a day of briefings on key issues, attendees will spend the second day on Capitol Hill meet- ing face-to-face with their senators and representatives to discuss the impact pending laws will have on their business. In addition, a half-day session on day
three will include an overview of a series of pressing regulatory matters. This year’s conference will allow
AFS and NADCA members to bring a colleague from the same company at a greatly reduced rate.
