EASTERN EUROPE
A strong exporter, Poland produced 1 million tons of castings in 2008. One of its growth markets is
construction, where the number of ductile iron applications continue to increase.
Poland—Approximately 40% of the
iron casting production in Poland is ex- ported. Gray iron shipments are forecast at 300,000 tons in 2010 before returning to 500,000 tons by 2016. Ductile iron ship- ments are expected to rise from 108,000 tons in 2010 to 180,000 tons in 2016. Czech Republic—Czech Republic metalcasting facilities are exporting more than 50% of their shipments of iron castings and 60% of aluminum shipments, which are forecast to in- crease from 66,000 tons in 2010 to 120,000 tons in 2016. Gray iron casting shipments are forecast to grow from 145,000 tons in 2010 to 295,000 tons in 2016. Ductile iron shipments are expected to increase from 33,000 tons to 62,000 tons in 2016. ing production has greatly increased in recent years in Hungary, gray and ductile iron have declined drastically. Romania—Though the market for
castings for the steel industry has mark- edly decreased in the past few years, the iron casting industry in Romania has rebounded and is expected to be strong in the future. Automotive and pipe appli- cations are expected to bring ductile iron tonnage back up to around 20,000 tons. Russia—Annual casting output in
Russia has fallen from 13 million tons to near 5 million tons. Gray iron shipments are expected to drop to 2 million tons in 2010 before rebounding to 3.5 million tons in 2016. Ductile iron is forecast to grow from 1 million tons to 2.1 million tons between 2010 and 2016. Aluminum production also looks to double, from 480,000 to 1 million tons, during the same time frame (Fig. 3).
