Western European metalcasting facilities, like the one pictured, are forecast to produce 16.6 million tons of castings in 2016.
Germany—Gray iron casting shipments are forecast to rise
from a 1.65 million-ton low in 2010 to a 2.8 million-ton high in 2016. Ductile iron shipments are expected to rise from 1.2 million tons to near 2 million tons per year by 2016. After dropping to near 500,000 tons in 2009 and 2010, aluminum casting shipments are to grow to 900,000 tons by 2016. U.K.—As the economy recessed in 2009, exports from
the U.K. also dropped off, reducing gray and ductile iron shipments to their lowest levels since World War II. Aluminum casting shipments are expected to hit new lows in 2010. However, the currency exchange rate of the pound remained relatively stable against the Euro, keeping the U.K. metalcasting industry

competitive in the Western European marketplace. Italy—Gray iron casting shipments from Italy declined
to 916,000 tons in 2008, dropped further the next year to 570,000 tons and are expected to drop again in 2010. Duc- tile iron tonnage is expected to fall to 450,000 tons in 2010. Aluminum casting shipments are forecast to drop to 500,000 tons in 2010 from 800,000 tons in 2007 and then grow at an annual rate of 11% as the automotive industry recovers. France—After growing strongly in
2004, the French economy slowed in early 2005 and declined through 2010. It is expected to begin rising again in 2011. Ductile iron shipments, spurred by the dominance of Pont-a-Mousson in the pipe market, are forecast to rise from a low of 750,000 tons in 2010 to 1,170,000 tons in 2016. Aluminum casting shipments, 60% of which are die castings, are expected to rise from 170,000 to 300,000 tons in 2016. Spain—Spain continues to be the

largest casting export nation in the European Union with a 160% ratio of shipments to demand. Gray iron casting shipments are forecast to rise 8.9% per year following the recession, while con- version to aluminum continues. Ductile iron is expected to return to 720,000 tons in 2016 from a low of 420,000 tons in 2010. Aluminum castings are forecast to rise to 180,000 tons in 2016.
