Feature 6 | SAFETY
Arc Protection includes a comprehensive self-diagnostic feature to ensure safe operation and maximum reliability. One D1000 Arc Protection module will cover a complete switchboard with up to six compartments. Multiple D1000 modules can be linked together to form a larger system of light sensors for corresponding large electrical installations. No specific configuration is required for the basic operation and advanced soſtware configuration is provided through USB sticks.
Hydraulic cranking systems Heinzmann has developed hydraulic-powered cranking systems, which are designed to provide instant and most reliable high crank speeds for fast and secured start-up of engines under harsh conditions.
Some engine applications require a safe,

independent or redundant and self-contained cranking system for absolute reliable engine starting. It is required for important operations, i.e. for marine diesel engines:
• Fire-fighting cargo pump applications; • Compressor drives; • Rescue boats;
with electrical or air starting systems. It provides much higher torque, which increases the application even at temperatures below -40°C. Failures of the electrical system will not affect the hydraulic system operation. Te accumulator stores the hydraulic

power for a long period of time and can be released immediately to power the hydraulic motor. The hydraulic power itself comes from either a direct engine, electrically or from an air driven pump. For redundancy each system is equipped with a manual charging hand pump. The systems are modularly designed
to meet each customer’s demand. Tese hydraulic cranking motors can be implemented into existing vessels. OMT
Viking addresses safety concerns with ETSO-approved range
Marine safety equipment manufacturer Viking Life-Saving Equipment AS has released its European Technical Standard Order (ETSO)-approved helicopter transportation suit and lifejacket for rescue operations offshore.
suit, Viking has become one of only a few suppliers worldwide to be able to offer a fully ETSO-approved system. In accordance with ETSO regulations the system comprises a helicopter transportation suit and lifejacket that have been tested and approved together – a stringent requirement that has held other manufacturers back from competing in the market. Te regulations stipulate that all EASA
F
members traveling via helicopter in hostile sea areas must have compliant personal protective equipment. Viking’s PS4003 Transportation Suit can
handle the most demanding evacuation situations while providing comfort and a close fit for maximum ease of escape. It is equipped with an intelligent thermal liner that regulates body heat, as well as a number of adjustment possibilities. Te suit boasts integrated valves that can remove trapped air to control buoyancy. Viking’s PV9302 Helicopter Lifejacket is

the wearer with minimum one minute of extra air. Te Escape Breathing System increases
the chances of survival for crew when escaping particularly threatening situations such as helicopter submersion. Te lifejacket sports a long list of features including detachable neck protection, a spray hood, emergency light, whistle, buddy line and liſting becket. Offshore sales manager at Viking,
Søren Jung, said: “Our ETSO-approved helicopter lifejackets have been on the market since early 2009. Our customers report that our system is easier to breathe through than competing products where the breathing ‘hose’ goes around the neck and breathing is impaired by, for example, a helicopter seat belt. We’ve also been informed that Viking’s system is much more user-friendly than what is currently available – and the lifejacket is lighter for more freedom of movement.” Viking offers a full range of helicopter
transportation suits, pilot suits and lifejackets, all of which will be available and ETSO-approved from 2010. OMT
