Russo-Finnish collaboration for oil spill combat icebreaker
Finnish companies STX Finland, Aker Arctic Technology and Southeast Trading have signed a cooperation agreement with Russian companies OAO Sovcomflot and FSUE Rosmorport for the development of a new generation of oil spill combat icebreaker.

he cooperation agreement, signed on 27 May 2010 in Finland, stipulated the development
and building of a new type of oil spill combat icebreaker for Sovcomflot, the largest Russian shipping company in terms of size. The new generation vessel represents a breakthrough in icebreaking technology and for the protection of the Baltic Sea from environmental damage. The agreement will also represent a step forward in strengthening the current Russo-Finnish cooperation in the field of shipbuilding. hull that is based on the icebreaking technology developed by Aker Arctic Technology. The vessel will be able to use an innovative sideways movement (athwart) to collect the oil in demanding ice conditions, as well as to break a broad ice band effectively. The vessel will also be able to be deployed in support, escorting and towing tasks independently of other vessels and for large tankers in the Baltic Sea. The oblique icebreaker operates
according to the well-known ‘double- acting’ stern icebreaking method and can break an ice channel of 50m width by proceeding with the side ahead. The vessel is a compact-sized icebreaking vessel with diesel-electric propulsion with three azimuthing thruster propellers. The propulsion solution and the special hull allow the vessel to operate efficiently ahead, astern and obliquely sideways, one of the propulsors is located in the bow, one
aft and one on side in the aft part of the vessel. The vessel has a double bottom, continuous main deck and a tween deck and forecastle. The superstructure for accommodation and work spaces is located in bow part of the vessel. Te icebreaker will be equipped with
three rudder propeller devices and will also be able to solve a wide range of towing and rescue tasks. Te vessel’s trial speed at full power in
deep, calm water is approximately 15kts and the economy speed at half power is approximately 12kts. In ice conditions the vessel is able to proceed at approximately 6kts speed in 60cm ice (both ahead and astern) and 3kts speed in 1m thick ice (both ahead and astern) at design waterline. Te vessel is classified by the Russian
