mmunity Development & Construction

Community Development:

Be the difference PROJECT TYPES Construction:

USIT run volunteer projects which are based on construction and other types ofmanual work. In the countries we send our volunteers to, there are many buildings which need foundational work or repair. It is vital that continued work is made on providing safe housing and drinking water to villages in rural areas. You may be an engineer, or just someone who is good at fixing and DIY. Whatever the case, this area may be just right for you!

What’s involved?

The construction projects are designed for proactive individuals and groups. Naturally the scheduling and activities of our construction projects are subject to change. This is mainly due to changes in local conditions. As a result, volunteers need to be able to think creatively and take initiative in order to achieve the most positive possible outcome for you and the local community.

Range of duties: • Basic construction/painting and renovation of the health centres.

• Improving and enhancing the facilities in various orphanages and pre-schools.

• Helping with the construction of new centres.

• Making a difference to the lives of poor communities living in slum dwellings by helping out with repairs and building.

USIT offer Construction volunteer placements in: • Ghana

• Cambodia • Thailand

• South Africa • Vietnam Length of Placements: All from 4 weeks.

Community Development projects vary depending on where you decide to volunteer. The result however is always the same as each of these projects allows you to make a positive impact on a community in need. No specific skills are required as duties vary but the most important attribute volunteers need to have is enthusiasm! No matter how small or large your role in the community is, you are there to help and give it 100%. You can be sure your help is appreciated and needed.

What’s involved?

Community development is a broad area and naturally individual communities will have their own specific areas which need help. Our community development projects vary quite dramatically fromeducating children about building a better andmore conscious society to spreading awareness on the topic of womens rights issues and social welfare.

In all societies, the vulnerable can often be the physically handicapped. In the developing world, volunteers are especially needed to aid in the rehabilitation and re-building of community for those who need care and attention.

Range of duties:

• Instilling social, psychological and physical security to the children in the community.

• Partake in environmental cleaning and activities which will awaken and enhance the villagers' consciousness and sense of responsibility to protect the environment and improve the local surroundings.

• Assisting in the nursing homes. • Helping develop computer and sport skills. • HIV/Aids awareness campaigns. • Teaching English.
