Health and Medical
The health andmedical area is one of themost urgent in the developing and third world countries. Most of the countries visited by USIT volunteers lack facilities, training and helpers. This is a stressful, challenging area to work in so patience and flexibility are required from our volunteers. However, these projects are also some of our most rewarding and insightful.
The health and medical area is a huge field and it varies drastically, depending on which project you choose in terms of the type of work you’ll be helping with and the range of patients you could be working with. You can expect to be thrown into the thick of things in a HIV clinic, birthing clinic, larger hospitals, local medical centres or rehabilitation centres. You could be working with children suffering from cerebral paralysis, autism, down syndrome or learning difficulties, the physically handicapped, the elderly or the homeless.
What’s Involved?
These projects are ideal for anyone studying medicine, nursing, physiotherapy or dentistry. If you are somebody training within the medical field, there are projects that offer you the opportunity to work with the local medical staff and gain medical experience under the supervision of qualified doctors and nurses. That said, you do not need to bemedically trained in order to become involved in one of our Health and Medical Projects, you just need to be somebody with a lot of love and patience who wants to really get involved and help those less fortunate.
