funny thing happened to me today on the way to the edi- tors: they returned my Letter from Publisher for a rewrite. Because this issue’s theme is Men’s Wellness, I included a few personal recollections from a woman’s perspective. But what I considered light banter and gentle ribbing about how women sometimes

perceive the opposite sex wasn’t funny at all—my attempts at humor came across as condescending and insulting.

It was, as I like to say, an integrative learning experience. How many times does miscommunication happen to us all, at the workplace, in relationships and in emails! I intend that my newly reconstructed message of men’s wellness is deliv- ered with the genuinely felt love in my heart and not with my fallback humor. I hope my honest experience will help other women who care for their men send the message they mean—without sounding mean-spirited.

One message is that we all want those we care for to be healthy. The 25 men’s health tips that Dr. Oz shares in this issue (page 24) are a great place to start. More of the types of healthy men’s products and services that we regularly feature in Natural Awakenings appear in this month’s Community Spotlights on Dr. Andrea Cole, of the Center for Age Management, and Jerry Greene, RPh, FACA, with the San Diego Compounding Pharmacy. It’s gratifying to hear the practitioners who support our magazine tell me that, while the wives initially urge their men to make appointments, the guys frequently return on their own. (They’re following tip num- ber 12 from Dr. Oz: Be a smart patient.)

Another message is that physical health and emotional well-being go hand-in- hand. One of my favorite Dr. Oz tips is number 10: “Don’t be an island.” Don’t face life’s stresses, or joys, alone. I thought of that recently when I attended my daughter’s pre-prom picture taking event and observed her interactions with her male friends. Their conversations seemed different than when I grew up—they shared their feelings and were more open. I like that, and I think it represents a positive generational shift.

To the men who are reading this: Thank you for all that you do, and for being a vi- tal part of our lives. We love you, admire you, care for you and want you to enjoy wellness.

The final message I’d like to share is a special tribute to “Uncle” Gus Cervantes, for being a man making a difference in the lives of families, and for that really cool ride on the outrigger canoe: Molama kekahi i kekahi—let us all take care of one another.

Warmest smiles,
