THE TRUTH ABOUT

Flea and Tick Treatments

by Elizabeth Allen

ummer is on its way. If you live in San Diego, finding out the truth about flea and tick treat- ments can be one of the most priceless things you do this summer for you and your pet; it may even save their life. All pesticides pose some degree of health risk for people and animals. Both

over-the-counter and veterinarian-prescribed flea and tick topical treatments contain pesticides that enter an animal’s internal organs (liver and kidneys), move into their digestive/intestinal tracts, and are eventually eliminated in their feces and urine. Humans who closely interact with dogs and cats treated with these chemicals can also be affected by the toxins. Recently, the EPA tightened its restrictions on topical flea and tick products because they documented a significant increase in the number of cats and dogs suffering from adverse dermal, gastrointestinal and neurological reactions, as well as 1,600 documented deaths during the last five years.

Redd Remedies award-winning natural products help you put your health in order.

If you decide to use a chemical on your pet: • Get educated and be proactive

• Monitor your pets and children closely; know what signs to look for • Keep records of what you use, and when • Don’t dose your pet and go to work or bed • Read the labels and follow the instructions

• Don’t ever dose a sick, elderly, pregnant or nursing pet or one that is on medication or has ever had an adverse reaction

• Immediately report any adverse reaction to your vet

• If your vet/clinic isn’t open, call an emergency clinic or the ASPCA’s national Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435

• Ask your vet/clinic to use the National Pesticide Information Center’s Veterinary Pesticide Adverse Effects Reporting portal to report incidents

• Report any adverse reactions to the manufacturer, which is required to report them to the EPA

• Report directly to the EPA via their “ask a question” page at
