“Relaxing in a zero stress zone

helps to dismantle the preprogrammed self-image, phobias, addictions and stress-creating confl icts that lie beyond any mental or intellectual approach,” Desai explains, “When you join yoga with Ayurveda, you have the combined power of body and soul, a power- ful synergy for healing and recovery from addictions,” which he refers to as unwanted weeds. An analogy is that while Western medicine fi ghts weeds with herbicides, ayurvedic treatments cleanse and rejuvenate the body, mind and consciousness, thus “keeping the soil inhospitable for weeds to grow in.” “Spirit, representing our core self, and the energy body, through which our spirit manifests, are eternal and in- separably one,” concludes Desai, who clarifi es that the visible physical body is an extension of the invisible energy body. In the release of blockages and the purifying of the body, we are linked to our invisible presence, oneness. We enter the domain of divine presence and grace, which initiates spontaneous healing. In this domain the doer, the ego mind, disappears and “the pres- ence performs the miracle.”

One’s agni needs to be balanced to enable proper digestion, now and in the future. The malas are the body’s wastes—stool, urine and sweat—formed as a result of various physiological activities, and it is important that they all fl ow properly. To restore balance often requires detoxifying the body via a cleansing, balancing, healing and rejuvenating system known as panchakarma. Shirod- hara, a facet of panchakarma, is an especially useful tool capable of stand- ing alone; it helps induce calmness and relaxation by dripping warm liquids onto the forehead. Detoxifi cation can also be accomplished through yoga and meditation,

as well as pranayama, a breathing technique frequently referred to in yoga as the breath of life. Pranayama techniques, which balance, detoxify and work synergistically with yoga postures, can be used throughout life. There are many other helpful Ayurvedic tools, including marma chikit-

sa, which uses key energy points analogous to acupuncture points. While Ayurveda’s tools encourage self-love and can assist individuals who are dealing with addictions, this “Science of Life,” used in India for 5,000 years, is more: a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that looks to treat the root cause of any health or life challenge.
