Go Green

with Artifi cial Turf

by Carol Hill

Despite slightly elevated rainfall levels and above-average snowpack this year, our region continues to experience signifi cant challenges to its water supply. The lingering effects of three years of drought, coupled with regulatory restrictions that reduce water deliveries to Southern California, have caused state and local reservoir levels to drop well below normal and limit the ability of water agencies to fi ll them. In a recent news release from the San Diego County Water Authority, Claude A. “Bud” Lewis, chair of the board of direc- tors, cautions, “…these restrictions could remain in effect for years, perpetuating our water supply shortages.” As it seeks long-term solutions, the Water Authority

encourages residents and businesses to continue their water conservation. One green solution that saves water and dol- lars is synthetic turf.

During the course of a year,

the average homeowner spends a minimum of $1,200 on water and lawn maintenance, so artifi - cial turf represents a cost-saving alternative to a sod lawn. It’s more environmentally friendly, too, for several reasons. Unlike natural grass lawns, synthetic turf doesn’t require irrigation or pesticides; it

creates 15 percent less runoff than natural grass lawns because of its superior drainage; and it doesn’t need mowing, which means less pollution from gas-powered lawn tools. Appearance-wise, synthetic turf has come a long way

since 1964, when the fi rst AstroTurf experimental fi eld was installed at Moses Brown School, in Providence, Rhode Is- land. Today’s homeowners can choose from dozens of realis- tic types of turf that offer them new ways to go green and stay green. When incorporated with drought-tolerant plants and permeable hardscapes, these new alternatives create beauti- ful lawns that enhance any home. Purchasing synthetic turf from a reputable supplier ensures that the products used to manufacture the grass are carefully tested for lead and other heavy metals and are completely safe for all applications. Most turfs come with a 10-year warranty, although some test lawns have maintained their beauty for more than 20 years. Homeowners who install synthetic turf can say goodbye

to brown spots, mud and bugs, mowing, weeding, pesticides and fertilizers—while gaining time and saving money. This fast-growing industry is helping to conserve water while keeping California beautiful—and green.
