ndrea Cole didn’t always have a burning desire to be a doctor. While she was deeply immersed
in research work on immunology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, Cole’s mentor encouraged her to work with people, rather continu- ing to do research. “I was working on my master’s degree and planning to go on doing research for my doctorate in immunology, when she suggested that my skills were more people-oriented than research-related,” says Cole, who acknowledges that it was her personal- ity that infl uenced the new direction for her life. “It’s been quite a journey, and while I know that I didn’t pick the easier path, I have loved every minute of it,” she declares.
Cole followed her mentor’s advice and began pursuing a new goal. A navy scholar- ship provided funding for her education at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Long Island, New York. She graduated in 1983, completed an internship in 1984, and then entered the military at Naval Air Station North Island on San Diego Bay, where she worked as a general medical offi cer. After paying back two years of her obligation to the navy, she began her residency training in family practice at Naval Hospital

Having two small babies, and with the First Persian Gulf War looming, I decided it was time to leave.” Cole than joined a large multi-specialty medical group in San Diego.
After 10 years of managing a large fam- ily practice and seeing an average of 25 to 30 patients daily at 10- to 15-minute intervals, Cole was frustrated by a world of symptoms and prescriptions. Patients barely had time to describe their com- plaints, and Cole only had time to write them a prescription. “It was the same thing
every day,” she says, “and I began to wonder what I was actually doing to move anyone towards better health.”
Cole attended her fi rst anti-aging conference in 1994 and was captivated by the lectures. “I realized that I could use the tools I was hearing about to help patients achieve better health” she recalls. “I fell in love with the fi eld, immersed myself in it, and within two years, was board certifi ed by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, which is not yet recognized by the American
