Summer kicks off with a world premiere of epic proportions. The details of Cleopatra’s dramatic life—Julius Caesar, Mark Antony and life-and-death struggles for power—have been shrouded in mystery. Until now. Get the inside scoop on the legendary queen at The Franklin Institute during “Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt,” which uses 150 ancient artifacts and modern-day multimedia technology that guide you through a land-and-sea exploration. (June 5, 2010-Jan. 2, 2011)

Not enough Egypt? Take advantage of the joint ticket deal, which includes admission to the renowned University of

Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology,

showcasing a large and diverse collection of Egyptian artifacts that represent 5,000 years of history. During the “Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt” self-guided tour, stand in awe of the world’s third-largest sphinx.

Practically royalty in Philadelphia, local brewers take the spotlight during Philly Beer Week, which is so big it lasts 10 days. Philadelphia’s rich brewing heritage started with the Founding Fathers and continues today, which is why Maxim magazine recently called the city “Maxim’s Favorite Beer Burgh.” Pour yourself into the region’s sudsy culture by sampling hand-crafted brews and joining guided tastings and dinner-and-beer pairings. (June 4-13)

For culture of a different kind, check out “Late Renoir” during one of only two stops in the U.S. After the obligatory run up the steps (à la Rocky) at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, slow down and take in more than 100 masterpieces by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and other legendary masters. (June 17-Sept. 6)

Boasting the largest collection of Renoir paintings anywhere, the Barnes Foundation is gearing up for its move from its relatively modest location in Montgomery County to Philly’s cultural hotspot, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Don’t miss your last chance to view one of the world’s best art collections in all its quirky goodness—arranged by Dr. Albert Barnes himself in a suburban mansion—before it closes in 2011.

Music fans treat their ears and groove to the sounds of cool jazz

during the West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival, which takes

on a New Orleans theme this year. Three days, two stages, more than 65 top-name performers, a kick-off parade, fun activities and no cost add up to one big summer must-do. (June 18-20)

Take a deep breath. Fragrance wafts through the air at the 1,050- acre Longwood Gardens during “Making Scents: The Art and Passion of Fragrance,” exploring the evocative power of perfume. You can even make your own personalized scent card. (Through Nov. 21)

The city where America was born knows how to throw a great birthday bash. Wawa Welcome America! features three eye- popping fireworks displays, along with the nation’s largest outdoor Fourth of July concert, delicious food, top-notch entertainment, patriotic ceremonies and an old-fashioned, flag- waving hometown parade. Best of all—it’s free. (June 26-July 4)

Don’t wait. Plan your trip and book your hotel stay at visitphilly.com.
