Born in Chester, PA, he was a longtime resident of the Washington area and founder of Lewis Medical Instruments of Rockville,MD, a pioneer in medical electronics and telemetry. He attended Drexel University prior to serving in the US Army Air Corps as a radio operator and later served as President of MADRAS Amateur Radio Society. He devoted his life to fighting social injustice and promoting equality for all.

JOHNIE ELIZABETH SIMMONS (Age 86)

Passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born and raised on a cattle farm in Mississippi, the fifth of seven children of Lucious and Myrtis Quin, Johnie married her childhood sweetheart, Robert Elisha Simmons, at age eighteen. She embarked on a wonderful life as the wife of a career Air Force officer, traveling the world and charming everyone with her sassy southern style. She attended nursing school in New Orleans and chose a career in government service at the Pentagon and abroad. She loved her beautiful home at Newcomb Place in Alexandria,Virginia and was a remarkable homemaker and lively hostess. After thirty two years of devoted marriage, Johnie was widowed when Robert died sud- denly of a stroke at age fifty-four. She became even stronger willed, fiercely independent and determined to embrace life to the fullest. She always had a quick smile, engaging laugh, kind word and ready wit, even in the final stages of her condition. Her credo was, "If you are not having a good time, it is your own damn fault!” She will be greatly missed by her family who loved and cherished her dearly. She is survived by two daughters: Sherry Carolyn Juroff (Kurt) and Sandra Kay Verdery (Ted); four grandchildren, Susan Elizabeth Lystlund (David), Lauren Simmons Verdery, Robert Edward Verdery, and Shannon Lee Boothe (Scott); and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Olivia Boothe.Her daughters married Naval Academy graduates and continued the military tradition. Johnie will rest for all eternity at Arlington National Cemetery with her beloved Robert.
