Among Frederick County’s most
popular destinations is historic downtown Frederick, Md., named both a “Distinctive Destination” and a “Great American Main Street Award Winner” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation during the past decade. Founded in 1745 and spared from the Confederate torch in 1864, Frederick’s 20-block commercial district serves as the core of the city’s 50-block historic district, a treasure trove of historic architecture. Adding to the district’s allure are the 115 specialty shops, 200 antique dealers and 45 restaurants and eateries quartered within these architecturally outstanding structures. As has been true since Frederick’s founding, the majority of the shops continue to be owned by sole proprietors who pride themselves on their distinctive inventory ranging from the sophisticated to the edgy, traditional and creative. Whether you’re in the market for a snowboard, a baby grand piano, original fi ne art, cutting edge fashions or 18th, 19th and 20th-century international furnishings, you’ll fi nd it here. Downtown’s eclectic mix of shops and wonderful restaurants offers something for everyone. While a trip to downtown Frederick is
fun any time, your visit can be made even more enjoyable when paired with a special event. On more than 25 weekends each year, professionally-mounted special events are hosted downtown or in nearby Baker Park, the city’s spectacular 44-acre municipal park, located two blocks west of Market Street.
