BOVA Furniture
www.bovafurniture.com
In appreciation of the qualities of European
walnut, the contemporary European furniture designers whose lines BOVA USA carries tend to leave the wood unstained or stain it only lightly to highlight its dramatic grain. "We're displaying a lot of European walnut furniture in our showrooms now, and we’re fi nding that our American customers are really surprised by the wood's natural beauty," remarked Steen Morup- Olsen, president of BOVA USA. Modern Italian furniture maker Calligaris is a leader in the trend toward European walnut furniture, and BOVA USA has the only Calligaris galleries in the Washington, D.C., area. Their collection of dining tables and chairs, sideboards, coffee tables, entertainment units and bedroom furniture is showcased in Falls Church, Va., and Beltsville, Md.,
Calligaris’ exceptionally functional dining
tables are particularly popular with customers, as they easily transform from small to large and offer an exceptional range of size, design and materials options.

Hardwood Artisans

The recent resurgence of interest in Danish
modern furniture has captured the imagination of Mark Gatterdam, Washington area furniture designer and co-owner of Hardwood Artisans.
Gatterdam has designed a new line of handcrafted sofas and chairs inspired by this mid-century, modern aesthetic. The exceptional craftsmanship is revealed in the pegged mortise and tenon frames that use interlocking pieces of wood instead of screws and nails and the carriage coil spring system that enhances durability. Customers collaborate with staff to design each unique piece, choosing among seven hardwoods, 25 fi nishes or stains and more than 100 fabrics, leathers and trims. If you prefer, Hardwood Artisans will use your fabric and/or match the stain on other pieces of furniture in your home. Showrooms are located in Alexandria,
Rockville and Fairfax. All Hardwood Artisans furniture is individually handcrafted from solid hardwood in their Woodbridge, Va., workshop.

Closets By Design

Wall beds are popping up in the most ingenious places—living rooms, home offi ces, entertainment units,
libraries and even craft
rooms. These space-saving beds fi t fully-made into cabinets and can be pulled down whenever needed. “Wall beds essentially add another room
to the home. They’re really popular with baby boomers who are downsizing from larger homes and with people who live in small spaces and
want to maximize every inch,” said Geoffrey Davenport, president and owner of Closets By Design in the Washington, D.C., area. “We come out to their homes and custom design the surrounding cabinetry to perfectly fi t their space and decor, build it in our Manassas workshop, then install it in their home.” Closets By Design often integrates wall
beds into larger cabinetry and offi ce systems to maximize the space and usefulness of the entire room. Their showroom is located in Manassas, Va.

Home interiors are going back to the future
with the renewed popularity of mid-century modern furniture. “The clean lines and relatively small scale is ideal for smaller spaces and modern homes,” stated Jeff Goldstein, president and owner of DESI Living Innovations. One benefi t of selecting new over vintage mid-century modern seating is today’s improved fabric options. Another benefi t is the wide range of sizes and confi gurations. “Our customers really appreciate that they can get classic mid-century modern designs crafted with just the right fabric, size and confi guration to work in a specifi c space in their modern day home,” Goldstein noted. The three-piece sectional shown here sells for $1799 at DESI Living Innovations, which has showrooms in Rockville, Pentagon City
