PHILAN- PHILANTHROPY
charity and work is underway, along with Uganda Wildlife Authority, to complete the second census of hippo numbers in the area.
Right now UCF has developed perhaps the most ambitious and comprehensive plan yet, the recovery of the Dura sector. This region covers 400km2 of land to the north of Lake George, linking Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area to Kibale Forest National Park and has seen the near disappearance of wildlife over the last 40 years. The region has no tourism and currently receives less than 1% of QECA’s patrol resources; as a potential extension of habitat for elephants in QECA and KFNP, it’s invaluable. The turbulent period between 1960-1986 saw the disappearance of not only elephants but also chimpanzees, leopards, hippos and crocodiles. The area is rapidly becoming an impenetrable bushland and there’s an urgent need to protect this region and return the landscape to its original condition. UCF is aiming to eliminate poaching and other potentially damaging activity in the area and work closely with communities to set up a more viable infrastructure, encourage repopulation of indigenous wildlife and develop tourism in the area. It’s a tall order but, if past projects are anything to go by, it’s certainly achievable with the right level of support and funding.

This charity has a proven track record of success, works to develop long-standing projects within the local communities and I’m a big fan. Over 90% of all funding is channelled immediately into projects on the ground, whether that be elephant trenches, ranger stations, mosquito nets or educating communities to better co-exist with local wildlife. Michael Keigwin continues to drive projects forward with the same spirit and enthusiasm that he did over 10 years ago and hats off to him.
UCF continues to search for new funding and I’d certainly recommend you take a look at their website www.ugandacf.org and contact them to find out more. They also plan fundraising events in London and you can contact them directly for details. Having attended the charity auction at the Patrick Mavros store in London last year, I’ll be sure to attend other UCF events this year. There are so many good news stories coming out of Africa that it’s time to sit up and take notice.
