The company saw great success in the 50s and 60s under his supervision. The engineer was also responsible for the design of the boatyard itself, creating it to recreate the feeling of being in a boat looking out from the observation deck - the position usually reserved for the captain. The boatyard carried on production right through the second World War. Riva are one of the oldest boat manufacturers and interestingly they are the only one that started as a boat builders and continue to produce boats up to the present day. Progress saw them begin to work with Remo Lodi, an expert in waterproof lamination for seaplanes, using aeroplane resorcinol glues. Tests were carried out in Florida in 1960 and as a result their boats became more hard-wearing and free from problems. In 1962 the Aquarama was launched, the first boat to use this build; the panels used in the construction were so strong they were dubbed ‘armoured lamination’ by Riva. This laminated design was so successful it is still in use in Aquarama today.
Development for the corporation came by way of service clinics for the boats, known as Revisione Assistenza Motoscafi or RAM for short; the first

branch opened in Sarnico in ’57 and soon other locations opened - Lake Como, Monte Carlo, St Tropez, Naples, Rome, Lake Garda. Eventually more than fifteen sites were opened. To motivate staff and create high standards, Riva built these RAMs and mortgaged them back to the operators. Clinic staff were happy to work for themselves and customers always received top level service. This is typical of Carlo’s approach to business. The clinics were also built in Riva’s typical style.
The company has carried on going from strength to strength, building a powerful reputation for building some of the world’s most beautiful boats. Carlo was constantly approached by companies wanting to buy Riva and eventually he sold on to Whittaker in the early 70s, remaining as manager for two years. The company has been through a succession of owners since and is now owned by Ferretti who still build the boats with the style and class that typify them.
