Ironically Cirque’s growth presents the company with perhaps its biggest challenge. Cirque’s seventh tour launches early this year, as does its seventh permanent show in Vegas. Later in 2010 a new permanent spectacle will also open in Dubai. Yet despite this expansion, Cirque is still playing to packed houses. The secret to this is a relatively short stay of around a month in each city which creates a rarity value. It is also making the permanent shows even broader in appeal by theming new ones in Vegas to popular icons with this year’s new offering inspired by the music of Elvis Presley.

Over the past 25 years Laliberté has carefully nurtured Cirque and he is already looking toward the next quarter century and beyond. “I don’t want to wait till I’m 60 years old in order to prepare the people who will replace me,” he says. It is unclear whether any of Laliberté’s five young children will share his talent for juggling money and magic and there is no doubt that it is certainly a rare combination.
