IPHONE DATING
iPhone apps are taking the media world by storm. Could the already lucrative dating market go mobile?
VAS or value added services are key to success in the modern mobile market. These can range from the basic SMS and MMS to million selling ringtones, mapping software and games - anything that encourages more interaction with a telephone than simple using it to make calls. Apple took this concept one stage further when they designed the iPhone. They created the App Store, a service that lets the end user browse and download applications from the iTunes Store. Some of these are free, or free for limited use and some come at a cost (see the previous issue of The Elevator for the most expensive app ever made). The apps are generally created by third parties and Apple give 70% straight to these companies or individuals. Oddly, Apple never created the App Store as a profit-making service but rather a free VAS to keep users on their phones for longer. A recent estimate though by Piper Jaffray, a US middle market investment banking firm predicted that the App Store could be turned into a marketplace with revenues exceeding $1 billion. Recently, the Guardian launched its own app, selling at £2.39. This has added £2 million annually to their business after more than 100,000 people downloaded it in the first three months. iPhone sales are set to reach 50 million annually across the globe.
Bed Media Ltd have taken note of the hugely profitable online dating market and ported it to the iPhone, taking advantage of all the features it has to offer. The iPhone has built in GPS allowing users to locate each other or select from other users nearby - perfect for a quick meeting. Messages from user to user are backed up using Apple’s push message service which allows participants to get instant notifications when they are contacted and takes the user straight back into the application. The London application has been built; for the rest of the UK the company are working with regional media owners to launch the platform alongside the publications in the area. As Bed Media Ltd start to expand the project internationally they are looking for partners in foreign domiciles who know

their particular business arenas well, have good media contacts and pre-established partnerships in place to ensure a smooth and focused launch. Bed Media have worked with the development company, Stonewash DDAG, to ensure subsequent international launches are straightforward, fast and cost-effective. Potential partners need only cover the cost of minor modification to the existing framework and the creation of a new database and they can be up and running within a matter of weeks. With all administration work being handled by Bed Media Ltd, international partners can focus on promotional work.
