PHILAN- PHILANTHROPY
in many cases it is actually a business and the bigger the business the costlier the overheads and consequently, the lower the resources to dispense. And there are some facts that are kept well below the radar - did you know that when you host a charity you can keep around 20% for yourself and your effort? A shocking and despicable figure considering charity is supposed to be for the benefit of others. I also find it difficult to understand how you can market a charity by displaying the hardship that another person or creature endures - but this is simply to play on emotional guilt and, given that the majority of people don’t even give blood, perhaps a necessary evil to motivate us into donating. Do you know why some of those charitable organisations become so big? It all boils down to the simple fact that for the majority of large donors writing a hefty cheque means a clear conscience. That is not to say that we shouldn’t donate money to the likes of the Red Cross and other worthy organisations, just that by spending more time thinking about it and researching it is possible to be much more effective with your donations. All this being said, it is wonderful to see that more and more people are getting involved in the philanthropic side of things - doing better by doing good. Luxury goods brands are also jumping on the band wagon - portions of sales revenue are

now being donated to those in need. Despite the obvious marketing advantage - and hoping that these companies are not being entirely cynical - I think it is a great thing to do. I’ve seen a shoe brand that give away a percentage for every pair sold. Those are good initiatives! Some people believe that it is deeply rooted in physics and the laws of nature so why not listen to the voice of karma?
I know for myself and my family that doing good is a tremendous thing to do and we’ll keep doing it until we are unable to keep it up, physically or otherwise, by which point I’m sure our children will take over and continue in our name because we have taught them that a healthy passion for compassion can change the world, a little bit at a time. Don’t try to take on all the world’s miseries at once; it is an insurmountable task even for the richest and most powerful people on the planet. All I’m trying to say is this: keep your eyes, hands and hearts open and make a difference where you know you can.
Alongside the worthy causes we present we would like to ask all of you, our dear readers, to share your philanthropic experiences with us and the best stories will be published throughout the course of this year. Please feel free to send your stories to
