Management of Cantieri Riva, as it was then known, passed on to Serafino, Ernesto’s third child. The year was 1907 and things were changing fast - new technologies were developing due to industrialisation. Serafino turned away from manufacturing large boats and instead turned his attention to experimenting with build techniques and different styles of smaller boat. Light gasoline engines were starting to become available and Serafino used them to power his new boats. He used both car engines and different specialised outboard engines in his boats and began to take part

in international races and competitions. It was these races that brought Cantieri Riva plenty of attention but racing did not make a profitable enterprise. Carlo Riva, the next in line to run the company, took attention away from these races.
It was Carlo who took the company to greatness; an engineer, he was responsible for the distinct styling the boats still possess today and the fact that the name Riva is now synonymous with elegance, grace and taste the world over. He was a workaholic, often working through holidays including Christmas. “He married me but also the sea” said his wife.
