Waste not, want less
Resource-efficient designs can save money, not only in the lower lifecycle costs of a building but during construction too.
Reducing and recovering waste relieves pressure on diminishing landfill capacity, cuts CO2
emissions and reduces demand on raw materials.
TUDIES conducted by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) demonstrate that schools projects can save over 0.5% of construction cost by reducing wastage and the cost of its disposal. These savings can be reflected in more competitive tender prices if the client defines a clear requirement at an early stage of procurement. For the £33m pathfinder development

of the Bridge Learning Campus in Bristol, WRAP supported the city council in setting specific requirements in the tender process. These would help drive waste reduction, recycling and re-use of recovered material down the entire project supply chain. Similar criteria were then adopted by Partnership for Schools across the BSF programme. They were also built into Bristol’s Strategic Partnering Agreement with main contractor Skanska as Key Performance Indicators. Skanska then set its own targets for designing out waste, waste
segregation on site, reuse of materials, just-in-time delivery and use of products with higher recycled content. The design development process was used to identify the best opportunities to reduce waste and reuse materials. Key measures implemented included re-using excavation materials on site, co-
