student accommodation
Bringing student services under one roof
The University of Bedfordshire has appointed Campus Living Villages as preferred bidder for the contract to build and operate an 850-bed, en-suite student accommodation facility at its Luton campus.
T
HE CONTRACT is also to manage the existing stock of student accommodation in the town, which amounts to 1,045 study bedrooms. The project forms part of the University’s £134m investment in its campuses aimed at improving the learning environment, says deputy vice chancellor Donald Harley. “The first phase of our redevelopment – a new Campus Centre – is well underway and on schedule to open in September this year. This will bring all student
services under one roof and will house a 240-seat lecture theatre, social and learning spaces and the Students’ Union.”
Flats and studios
The 850 new study bedrooms will be delivered in two phases between August 2011 and 2013 and will include a range of en-suite rooms, flats and studios, as well as communal areas for socialising and study. Campus Living Villages started its UK operations in late 2008 and this will be its
second project here. Internationally, the company currently owns, manages and is developing around 45,000 beds in partnership with more than 50 universities. It has appointed Kier Marriott as construction partner for the Bedfordshire scheme, with Davis Langdon acting as consultant.

Nido residence underway at Notting Hill
I
SG HAS commenced work on a Nido student residence in Notting Hill, London, for the Blackstone Group. The 272-bed project involves a seven-
storey reinforced concrete frame structure and features an internal courtyard area at first floor level. Covering nearly 90,000 sq ft, the accommodation comprises 233 rooms, including twin bed apartments, single studio units and specially designed disabled rooms.
Retaining wall
Designed by architects TP Bennett to complement the surrounding built environment, the new student accommodation will incorporate a brick façade to the lower five storeys, with curtain walling to the upper two levels. Proximity to the Grand Union Canal and sloping site topography have resulted in challenging ground conditions requiring a reduced level dig and the installation of a sheet piled retaining wall, to protect the canal tow path.

The scheme embraces the modern methods of construction (MMC) ethos, with offsite manufactured bathroom pods and kitchen units used throughout the development to speed construction and provide greater quality control. The building also aims for a very good BREEAM environmental performance rating by utilising efficient air source heat pumps and a green sedum roof, which incorporates bat box habitats. Ground floor level will feature a gym, lounge area and six individual work space units. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2011. • ISG is on track to complete the 33-
storey, £120m Nido Spitalfields development by late summer 2010.
