This system allows the orthodoxies of historical school design to be challenged and gives architects the opportunity to rethink how space is used for learning within the school. Some schools are providing computer

devices to students on an individual basis which they take home and are exploring ways of giving them 24 x 7 access to appropriate online information, resources and communities of interest. With Web 2.0 integration, digital safety and cyber bullying are causing grave concern in

schools, internet access must be filtered so that students can only access age appropriate material.

Mixed ability

It has been said that schools of the future will be more about a state of mind than a state of building. Will there be schools as we know them in the traditional sense and how will the personalised learning agenda affect design? Learning spaces need to be designed around the schools’ vision.

Some schools such as Weydon School in Farnham Surrey, have chosen to instigate vertical tutoring with mixed ability groups where students are placed on different pathways whilst others have a more traditional ethos and want technology to help them make greater efficiencies in teaching and encourage collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing.

Dual touch

whiteboard

The simplicity of a whiteboard combines with the power of a computer to produce a SMART Board interactive whiteboard. This brings interactivity to any environment and is now available with a dual-touch feature. Two people can simultaneously write on or touch the interactive whiteboard – it’s an easy way to work together and provide more students with access to the board.

SMART Classroom Suite is designed to transform the computer-enabled classroom into a collaborative, interactive and efficient learning environment. Combining four of SMART’s educational software applications, the suite supports the key stages of teaching and learning – from lesson creation and delivery to student assessment.
