Shirlaine’s close proximity to ‘ED’ sufferers means she finds it increasingly frustrating that her post- production skills are perceived as a way of masking the truth about bodies.

She stresses: “I find retouching most harmful when it’s passed off as a natural image. No-one looks as ‘perfect’ in real life as they do in a professionally lit, shot and retouched image.

I feel it’s vital that we acknowledge when retouching has taken place, as it’s

such common practice

nowadays.” She adds: “Skilful retouching is an art formin its own right, so it’s about time

She adds: “Even freshly straightened hair doesn’t last very long when you’re on a shoot. And there’s nothing

we claimed the credit for our work. It should no longer be a taboo subject.”

And how does flame-red-merging- into-black-haired Shirlaine deal with her own image?

“I think all photographers are image conscious. We are visual people so it’s a given really. We all want to be well presented within the confines of our job. But practicality issues come into play too. I can’t imagine turning up to a job weighed down with cameras and lights, sporting a pair of killer heels.”

But even when her hair has issues with stability deep down in the pit of a rock concert, at least Shirlaine remains confident she’s never going to have such problems with her lighting equipment. She says: “For me Bowens is ‘take anywhere’ kit - especially combined with the Travelpak and Pulsar units. It’s a studio in two easily portable bags, allowing me to shoot thoroughly planned set-ups and sessions at the drop of a hat.”
