higher end Gemini R and Pro heads); both units in the Classic range are also calibrated fromfull to 1/32 over a five-stop range.
So why another model in the Gemini range?Well, I think it’s a great idea as it will give photographers a real choice in deciding which unit best suits their needs. Most of us don’t really need all the bells and whistles that come on most flash units these days, and don’t really have a choice when buying flash as to whether we want them or not, so Bowens are giving us just that, a choice. Bowens will be releasing a 250Ws and a 500Ws unit in the new
Classic
range; as the new units will be priced below the ‘R’ and ‘Pro’
range the
new Classics will offer an excellent spec at a really affordable price. The more I get to know the new Classic range the more I’m impressed
with it; even though these units are low on price, they are not low on quality.
‘the new Classic’s will offer an excellent spec at a really affordable price’
This is by no means some stripped back unit which compromises on spec or build quality. Don’t forget that other brands often use cheaper materials on their lower end models and, as usual, Bowens have certainly not cut-back on the build of these units; or any of their heads for that matter. So, whether you buy a modest Gemini 200, a new Gemini 500 Classic, or even a top-end Gemini 1500Pro, you still get the s a m e , t o u g h , metal body w i

rubberised handle. It’s one of the m a n y
things I love about the Bowens brand, all of their heads are built like Panzer tanks; you just can’t beat them in terms of built quality.
The Classics also come with the usual, user-replaceable flash tube and long-life Halostar 250W modelling lamp, which are two key things we take for granted, but they are often not standard on other brands. So when you start adding up all those benefits and features, these new Classics will be well worth a look at.
Bowens have truly come a long way since the 70’s, its a huge credit to them that they still design and build high quality flash that anyone can afford, whether they’re top end pros or simply enthusiasts looking at their first set of lights.
I received an email fromsomeone the other day askingme what would be a good, inexpensive starter kit, ‘I’monly an amateur’ he said, ‘I’ve only got a couple of 5D bodies and 5 L series lenses, I only want something to play around with. Sounds like a ‘classic‘ Bowens customer I thought.
