Themain image here was shot while at Focus-On-Imaging inMarch this year.My husband (Trevor) and I had been invited to appear as guest photographers hosting the Bowens demonstration area over two days. A large part of the two days there was spent demonstrating one of our favourite lighting modifiers, the Bowens Fresnel 200 Spot Attachment. I really enjoy working with this accessory so much that I just had to demonstrate it to the masses; this modifier is definitely in regular use at our studio, and is the one light modifier that we would not be without.
During the trade exhibition I used it to create a classic 1930’s Hollywood look, reminiscent of a George Hurrell or Clarence Sinclair Bull style portrait. The set-up for this image was really simple; it’s something that anyone can do. I placed a single Gemini 500Pro up high above the model, at a 45º angle. The Fresnel, when used at this angle, allowed me to create those wonderful, deep shadows.
The Fresnel would certainly be an asset to any studio, it can enhance even the most simple of portraits; you can instantly turn a boring head and shoulders style picture into such a romantic feeling shot without even trying. It will enhance any female portraits or beauty shots, while shooting men with it can help produce a rough and rugged look, or even a handsome, mysterious look.
The second image (inset) was created during the same session, I again used the Fresnel spot at 45°, but used with a wider iris. I made the dress on the stand, this was to demonstrate to the the audience how simple it can be to take some fluffymaterial, a few pins, and turn it all into a fantastic wedding dress in minutes.

Fresnel 200 Spot Attachment
