Terps’ Catalino takes on a big challenge

Maryland star shows larger defenders can’t stop him against Navy

by Christian Swezey

In less than three minutes of the second quarter of his team’s 11-9 victory over Navy before 5,618 on Saturday at Byrd Stadi- um, Maryland junior Grant Ca- talino gave his team momentum and demolished the convention- al wisdom on how best to de- fend him. The Midshipmen (5-6) took their last lead at 3-1 following a goal by senior Joe Lennon with 10 minutes 55 seconds left in the first half. Catalino answered with three goals in 2:28; the last gave the Terrapins a 4-3 lead with 2:45 left. Catalino entered as the leader

in goals and assists for Mary- land (7-2). He scored five goals, including the winner in over- time, in an 11-10 victory over Duke on March 6. Since then, opponents guarded Catalino not with their best defenseman but their biggest. Towson used Michael Landy (6-foot-1, 215 pounds) to hold

Catalino scoreless on March 12; North Carolina used shortstick Tyler Morton, a defensive mid- fielder, (6-2, 183) on Catalino in some situations and helped hold him to one goal, scored in the fi- nal seconds; and Virginia red- shirt sophomore Matt Lovejoy (6-1, 197) held Catalino without a goal last week. Saturday, Navy gave a first ca- reer start to senior Gordon Law- son, who is 6-4, 228 pounds. Lawson guarded Catalino but was unable to stop the three- goal spurt. “I haven’t seen that much time and room [to shoot] since Duke,” Catalino said. “Ever since then, people hadn’t been face- guarding me, but they’d been keeping an eye on me.” Navy’s offense had a two-

pronged attack. One week after being in on 16 of 20 settled pos- sessions, senior midfielder Pat- rick Moran was in on 19 of 24. He finished with two goals and one assist. The other wrinkle came from Arizona. Senior Kyle Kapron, a native of Chandler, Ariz., scored three goals on four shots. He en- tered having scored four goals in his career. All three goals came on plays that started with Kapron behind

the goal with the ball. He then drove to the goal and scored on a close shot. On the play after the first two goals, Maryland sent a longstick to double-team him as he shot. Kapron scored anyway.

But the Midshipmen didn’t

have enough possession to ex- ploit the matchup further. Maryland won 17 of 23 faceoffs; crucially, that included all three faceoffs after Navy had trimmed its deficit to one in the second half. “It’s frustrating not to get the ball back” after the goals, Navy Coach Richie Meade said. “I don’t have an answer for that one.” Navy entered winning 43 per- cent of its faceoffs. Before the game, all four faceoff specialists and faceoff coach Mark Goers met with the referees to go over how not to be called for a vio- lation on the draw. The Midship- men were called for only two vi- olations — down from previous weeks. The second was critical. Navy trailed 7-6 following a

goal by Kapron with 14 seconds left in the third quarter. Primary faceoff specialist Bryn Holmes was guarding Kapron on the play and he ceded his spot on the faceoff to sophomore Jake

Kevin Durant scored 35 points and

rookie reserve Serge Ibaka hit a cru- cial basket in the final minute, allow- ing Oklahoma City to stave off a late rally by Phoenix in a victory. The Thunder limited the Suns to a season-low 34 points in the second half but needed a late basket from an unlikely source to avoid defeat. Ibaka scored inside with 33.3 sec- onds left to push Oklahoma City’s lead to 91-86, after the Suns had closed a 12-point deficit to three.

GRIZZLIES 107, SPURS 99

Zach Randolph had 28 points and

15 rebounds as Memphis dealt San Antonio a big setback in the playoff race. The Grizzlies, with their own playoffs hopes gone, settled for drop- ping the Spurs down to the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. It was the first win for Memphis in San Antonio since 2005. With three games left, letting the Grizzlies walk out with their first win in 11 tries may prove costly for the Spurs.
