Regarding the March 21 story “The Washing” by Reshma Yaqub

The custom of washing of the dead is also done by the Jews in a very similar way. Maybe our differences are not that great. …

A good article from WaPo, for a change. Thanks! Also, Steve, washing of the dead is also done by observant Christians as well.

I am not a Muslim, but found this story moving. The ritual washing may be a
human thing, more than a religiously specific thing. My sister and I did the same for my mother (without the benefit of the running water & basin). There was no plan or religious need, it just seemed like the right thing. It gave us peace and strengthened our sisterly bond. We are all vulnerable and mortal. It is good to reflect on that which is an essential part of our humanity.

Thank you for this — a beautiful piece that seems to have underscored some very human connections that we all are well served to be reminded of. I am heartened by so many comments from other faiths, seeing themselves (and
key commonalities) in your story.

Thank you, Reshma, and may Allah reward you for efforts to bring accurate knowledge of Islam to those who are without accurate knowledge. Through this knowledge may come understanding and perhaps peace. Even if it isn’t your intent, you have given the “invitation” or “dawah” to Islam, which is the obligation of all Muslims. Allah’s peace be upon you.
