Ausmus makes first trip to DL
Los Angeles Dodgers back-
up catcher Brad Ausmus is on the disabled list for the first time in his 17-year major league career. The Dodgers made the move Saturday because Aus- mus has a pinched nerve in his back. He’s expected to be sidelined only as long as the 15-day stint on the DL. A.J. Ellis was recalled from
Class AAA Albuquerque and will catch knuckleballer Char- lie Haeger on Sunday against the Marlins so the team can give Russell Martin a day off. The move was retroactive
to Friday. Ausmus, who turns 41 Wednesday, is tied for sev- enth on the all-time list in games behind the plate. Three players with more than 10 years in the majors have never been on the DL — the Yankees’ Javier Vasquez and Randy Winn and the Braves’ Derek Lowe. REDS: RHP Mike Leake, the team’s top draft pick last June, will make his debut on Sunday. Leake pitched for Ari- zona State last year. He’ll be the 21st player since the draft began in 1965 to make the jump without appearing in a minor league game. The last was Xavier Nady with San Diego in 2000.

Cubs: LHP Ted Lilly’s rehab start in the minors has been pushed back a second time because of his sore back. Lilly, on the 15-day DL after shoulder surgery, was expected to pitch on Sunday for Class AAA Iowa. Instead, he’ll try to throw in a bullpen on Monday. Red Sox: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed two hits and no runs in five innings as he began a 30-day rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket. Matsuzaka has been on Boston’s disabled list since April 3 with a neck strain. Tigers: Detroit’s top draft pick last year, RHP Jacob Turner, threw five scoreless innings a year out of high school in his professional debut Friday for Class A West Michigan. Twins: RHP Carl Pavano will start in Minnesota’s home opener at the new Target Field on Monday. Yankees: Fifth starter Phil Hughes allowed one run and six hits over six innings in an extended spring training intrasquad game. It was the second and final extended spring game for Hughes, who will make his first regular season start Thursday.
