She taught pre- kindergarten at Green Acres for 15 years before becoming an admission director. Farquhar grew up in the D.C. area, attended the National Cathedral School for Girls, and worked at Maret’s summer camp during high school. Dunning is a former science teacher with a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in environmental science. “I was the fi rst in my family to attend

college, and I always knew I wanted to teach,” says Dunning.

Who decides?

No one person at a school makes admission decisions. Admission offi ces work closely with a committee that includes teachers and administrators. “Admission committees labor over decisions,” writes Irvin in her new third
