ADVER TISEMENT
For me, education has become a
mission ... I know that education can change a life, because it
changed mine.
— Diane Dunning, admission director
edition of Georgia Irvin’s Guide to Schools: Metropolitan Washington. “The committee
may meet over the course of several weeks to carefully consider all of the information on each child,” she notes. Maret’s admission committees include
the head of school and directors of the appropriate division—Upper, Middle or Lower School. “Our job is to present applications to them,” says Farquhar. “We really rely on their feedback.” Each committee member reads each applicant’s fi le and writes comments. As director of fi nancial aid as well as admission, Farquhar is privy to applicants’ fi nancial information but takes care not to share it with the admission committee. A separate committee that includes the business manager determines fi nancial aid offers. At Green Acres, all fi nancial conversations are with the business offi ce, never with the admission offi ce, but some schools consider fi nancial need when making admission decisions. Schools often make a concerted effort to
attract a socially and economically diverse range of students. They may also try to accept some students with questionable academic qualifi cations with the hope that a suitable learning environment will lead to success. “For me, education has become a mission,”
says Dunning. “I know that education can change a life, because it changed mine.”
