DEATHNOTICE

ABUDABBEH

NIMET ABUDABBEH (Age 98)

Mrs. Nimet Abudabbeh daughter of Kamel and Dureya Sukhon, an iconoclast of her generation of Palestinians, died on March 10, 2010 at her home of atrial fibrillation. Mrs. Abudabbeh was born in Tulkarem, Patestine. She, like her generation of Palestinians, was never given a chance to live or die in her country. Her passing is yet another loss, as she like others of her age group, experienced a Palestine that none of the present generations ever knew. Like her generation she had to endure the change in the quality of life that was imposed on her and others who had to make a life that was to become so dramatically different. Mrs. Abudabbeh endured many challenges in addition to losing her country of birth. Recognized by many for her outstanding parental and homemaking skills, she raised three children; two girls and a boy in different countries as her husband like other

Palestinians, made his living in several different countries to include Turkey, Lebanon and Libya. She had the additional challenge and strength of raising a son who had special needs who remained with her until her death. She lost her husband, Naim Abudabbeh prematurely when he was killed by a motorist in 1974. Mr. Abudabbeh a graduate of the University of California, Davis (1928) was the first horticulture expert in the Middle East. Mrs. Abdulhadi lost her younger daughter, Nural Abdulhadi in 1991 to cancer. Mrs. Abudabbeh was one of the first female Palestinian economists to work at the World Bank. Despite these tragedies, Mrs. Abudabbeh remained compassionate toward those around her, pleasant and solid in her unshakeable beliefs, treating even those who had caused her dispossession of her homeland with utmost respect and often with love. One friend described her as "a great lady and one of the smartest, wittiest, elegant and cultured Arab women of her generation". Another friends described her as "a great lady with a sense of humor and an elegance of expression that no longer exists in our modern world". She was an avid reciter of Arabic poetry and recited many verses to help her cope and to continue to maintain a positive attitude. One particular poem seemed to help her persevere despite her failing health prior to her death. The words "Let events go as they may, and do sleep without a worry, as in a blink of an eye God may change a situation from one to another." Mrs. Abudabbeh is survived by her oldest daughter, Nuha Abudabbeh (First clinical and Forensic Palestinian psychologist); her son, Nedi Abudabbeh of Washington, DC; her grandson Hayham Abdullhadi of Portland Oregon; her broth- ers, Hassan Sukhon of New Jersey, Mustapha Sukhom of Florida, Wael Sukhon of Amman; her sisters, Ikram Sukhom Bizrah and Fatinah Sukhom of Canada, and a adopted daughter, Rabiyeh Ercin of Istanbul, Turkey.
