Father and son duo Phillip and David Reynolds of Oak Telecom have begun their London Marathon training programme. Here’s a snapshot from Phil’s London Marathon Diary:

Spring is showing signs of appearing at last which is great news for David and I. Doing nine mile runs in the dark after a day at work was not the best of fun. We are knocking off the nine-ten milers quite regularly now and we have a couple of 15s under our belt. The last few miles of those 15s are enough to drive a man to think... ‘what the hell am I doing’ – especially at my age! The biggest psychological battle for us both is imagining having to run another 11 miles on top of those 15. I am told the atmosphere and support from the crowd on the day gets you through, but the thought of it is frightening. I keep thinking of Eddie Izzard’s 43 marathons in 51 days and the pain he must have gone through. Pain aside. we have managed to keep injury free so fingers crossed we will continue that way. What we need now more than anything is sponsorship from our friends in the channel. It’s very easy to

HRH The Prince of Wales was joined by a host of stars last month for Comms Dealer charity partner, The Prince’s Trust Celebrate Success Awards at London’s Leicester Square Odeon.

ir Michael Caine, Bond girl Gemma Arterton and comedian Michael McIntyre were among those at the Oscar-style ceremony, recognising young people who have overcome issues from drug addiction to homelessness to achieve success. The awards were hosted by charity ambassadors Tess Daly and Vernon Kay. Award winners included reformed addict Karen McLaughlin, 26, who started on a downward spiral of drugs at age 11, beginning with cannabis, escalating to amphetamines and eventually heroin. A 12-week development course with The Prince’s Trust helped Karen get her life back on track. She has now written a paper on substance misuse for Sunderland City Council and is a Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador, reaching out to other young people.

At the awards she was presented with the Capgemini Young Achiever Award by HRH The Prince of Wales and Sir Michael Caine. Caine said: “Karen’s experiences have moved and humbled me. She has faced a difficult life, but she has not only overcome her own issues, she is also committed to helping other young people avoid a similar fate.”

The 1,500-strong audience consisting of high profile individuals and corporate leaders from across all sectors including communications and technology went on to hear how Mark Livsey, 30, had set up his own parcel delivery business in the face of muscular dystrophy. A keen sportsman in his youth, Mark, from Manchester, developed muscular dystrophy at age 18. He felt his immobility affected his job opportunities. This led to low self-esteem and emotional problems. He was supported into self-employment by The Prince’s Trust Business Programme. England football legend Andrew Cole, who presented Mark

with the RBS Enterprise Award, said: “Mark’s triumph today should be an example to us all. He has shown strength of character and resilience and has made a success of his business even in times of recession.”

Other award winners included a group of young care leavers who have worked together to change perceptions of Looked After Children and those leaving care in Sheffield, many of them mentoring younger care leavers. They were presented with the Balfour Beatty Community Impact Award by actress Gemma Arterton.

HRH The Prince of Wales set up The Prince’s Trust because he wanted to help change young lives in the UK. The Trust has helped more than 600,000 young people since 1976 and needs to raise almost £1m a week to continue this support. Caine added: “I’m a great admirer of The Prince of Wales and the work of his Trust to help disadvantaged young people. These awards highlight the challenges young people face today, but also show us just how much young people can achieve with the right support.”

The young people in The Prince’s Trust Celebrate Success Awards have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. Comms Dealer charity partner The Prince’s Trust helps change young lives in the UK through practical and financial support, developing skills as well as confidence and motivation.
