Growth in IPT sets the pace

A TALE of two trends characterised the Western European Enterprise Voice market last year, which fell over 23 per cent but showed solid growth in Q4 2009, more robust than any quarter since Q4 2007. IP Telephony continues to be the fastest growing segment of the Enterprise Voice market, with IPT representing nearly 70 per cent of the total telephony market, the remainder being legacy market PBXs and KTS. According to Synergy Research

Group, the top three vendors gaining share in Western Europe included Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya, and Aastra. Market share gains in Western Europe in 2009 were dif- ficult, says Synergy’s pundits, with those that gained or lost evenly split between seven vendors gaining share and seven vendors losing. Alcatel-Lucent got the largest

share gain year over year with a gain of 2.64 market share points, followed by Avaya with 1.47 points and Aastra with 1.41 points. Jeremy Duke, Principal Analyst

and Founder, Synergy Research Group, noted: “In looking at the vendors in Western Europe, we see an extraordinary tight race for the first position. “It could be argued that three vendors tied for second place in

2009. Nowhere else in the world do we measure such a close prox- imity and concentration of market shares.”

The results for 2009 market

share leadership across West Europe indicate a diverse set of rankings. For example, the top three ranked vendors in the UK were Avaya, Cisco and Mitel. In France, the top three rankings were Alcatel-Lucent, Aastra and Cisco. In Germany, Siemens was number one, followed by Avaya and Alcatel-Lucent. Another point of interest highlighted by the research is the growing market for IP phones in Western Europe.

Although Cisco is the lion-share holder of the market, it continues to see its share under attack. In 2009, Cisco shed 3.5 market share points compared to Alcatel-Lucent gaining 5.2 market share points.

its Opal Office Broadband proposi- tion to offer a complete small busi- ness homeworking solution. Paul Lawton, MD of Opal, commented: “There are on aver- age 390 new businesses setting-up each week.
