Kevin Barker
DATASHARP has named Kevin Barker as its new Director of Business Development. According to Datasharp, his appointment signals the company’s increased focus on enterprise level UC opportunities, and heralds the promotion of new technologies to the existing Datasharp Group plus the recruitment of new resellers. Barker has 30 years experience in the comms market and has worked for suppliers such as BT, Siemens and Samsung. He stated: “I have worked with
Datasharp from a supplier perspec- tive for the last 10 years. We have plans in place to grow significantly over the next 12 months, and will be working in close partnership with our major suppliers to move into the large enterprise marketplace.” Chairman Paul McIntosh com- mented: “Datasharp is progress- ing strongly and Kevin’s industry knowledge and proven track record will be instrumental in continuing our growth.”
AVAYA has lifted the lid on the new release of Avaya IP Office, the company’s flagship comms solution for SMEs, designed to improve collaboration, increase productivity and bring greater flexibility to busi- nesses with 20 employees or less. Notably, the new release fea-
tures UC capabilities to deliver col- laboration tools using voice, instant messaging, presence and video. Avaya claims to make unified communications up to 40% more affordable for small businesses. General Manager for Small and
Medium Enterprise Communic- ations at Avaya, Anthony Bartolo, said: “With Avaya IP Office 6.0 in place, small businesses don’t have to sacrifice easy, intuitive operation in order to get the enhanced communi- cations features of large enterprises. “Our latest version provides SMEs with the next generation collaboration tools necessary for competing more effectively.” Avaya IP Office 6.0 introduces video collaboration through a new IP Office Video Softphone appli- cation. This offers voice control features via a virtual phone or a PC or laptop supporting point-to- point video communications when visuals are required. Computerlinks goes for virtual

support capacity in a multi-site network to 1,000 users. Avaya IP Office also enhances business con- tinuity capabilities beyond telepho- ny operation to now include voice messaging, auto attendant capabili- ties and other functionality. According to research house IDC, firms with less than 20 employees account for more than 90% of small businesses worldwide. Avaya IP Office is aiming to crack this market segment with a new combination card. This is a single card that does the job of sev- eral cards to support digital, analog and IP devices. Avaya says that its combina-
tion card, along with a new line of phones for businesses with less than 20 employees, reduces costs without sacrificing capability.
The distributor will provide a combination of knowledge and additional resource to better equip partners while offering higher mar- gins when recommending virtuali- sation solutions across vendors such as Citrix, Microsoft, The Virtual Machine Company and VMware. The services will, initially, be
available to resellers in the UK and Ireland, with the plan to deliver globally in the future. Kathryn Miller, Professional
Services Manager at Computer- links, said: “As the business case for

virtualisation is now well accepted, resellers are under increasing pres- sure to deliver solutions that are carefully planned to meet their cli- ents’ specific needs. “However, many resellers don’t
have the resources or time to devel- op these skills themselves. By part- nering with us, they can deliver the expertise without the overhead.”
CONVERGENCE Group (Networks) has opted for BT Wholesale as a preferred supplier of data services in an agreement worth £10m over five years. Neal Harrison, MD of Convergence Group, commented on the deal: “BT Wholesale’s Ethernet product is replacing the access method for the vast majority of our products, and is putting us in the position of being able to offer cost-effective, high bandwidth, flexible customer solutions including VPLS, Internet Access and point-to- point connections.”

They were set an Apprentice style challenge to raise as much money as they could, in as creative way as possible. Unicom matched every pound they raised. Patrick McLaughlin plunged 12,000 feet from an aeroplane in a sponsored skydive; Chris Mullen created a range of quiz sheets and competitions; and Holly Almond organised cake sales at Unicom’s Manchester headquarters, as well as drafting in male colleagues for a sponsored leg wax.
