Te G.D.L. (Greg Deering Limited) banjo carries Greg’s namesake because he really enjoys the understated elegance of this model. Combining the beauty of the tone of walnut with the aesthetic elegance of the hand set abalone trim along the edges of the fingerboard and resonator sides, this banjo is more affordable while featuring the artistry and sparkle that is as beautiful as its tone. California grown English Curly Walnut gives you the blend of crisp clear tone with a beautiful touch of sweetness.
We talk about our Sierra banjo in this catalog as being a great professional banjo, which raises the question: If the Sierra is so good, why buy a G.D.L.? For many people the G.D.L. is enjoyed for the added value of the craſtsmanship, precision and artistry. Look closely at the stripes around the peghead. We triple bind the peghead with a seamless white/ black/ white trim on the sides and the top of the peghead which is something you don’t see on other makes of banjos. As an illustration of the value of the G.D.L. compared to the Sierra, it takes more time to do all the binding on the G.D.L. banjo than it takes to build the entire Sierra model from start to finish.
On the G.D.L., as on the Ivanhoe banjo, patience and care go into cuting the many strips of multicolored abalone shell which are inlaid beside the ivoroid binding, trimming the figured walnut neck and burl walnut resonator. Intricate abalone and mother of pearl inlays adorn the hard, dense, ebony fingerboard and peghead. Te precise hand work that goes into our upper line banjos is something rarely found in today’s fast paced world.
It’s an investment you’ll be glad you made every time you play it.
“A few years ago the artisans at Deering built a Greg Deering Limited for me in your custom shop. Te day my G.D.L. arrived at our local Deering dealer here in Green Bay, WI was about the best day in my life as a banjo picker. I’ve been playing bluegrass and folk since I was a kid in the early 1970’s. I have had the privilege to play with some of the best musicians in the country and have heard some amazing banjos over the past 40 years or so. But when this beautiful instrument began to play itself at my hands, I knew I had found the exact feel and sweet sound I had only imagined. I am grateful for the opportunity to play this work of art every time I pick it up! Tank you for changing my ‘mid-life’ for good!!! Tanks for the enjoyment!!!” -D.S. Canada
