“Aſter we had the Deluxe designed and built, our customers were asking for something a litle fancier with a bound fingerboard. I wanted an inlay that was nice but simple to do. When I design inlays I make a tablet of blank fingerboard drawings so I can sketch, doodle and draw inlays. I had been working on coming up with an inlay patern for the Maple Blossom for quite a while.
I was siting on the couch with the tablet and wasn’t coming up with it. Janet sat down and asked me what I was doing. I told her that I was working on this banjo, the next step up from the Deluxe. I showed her what I was doing and told her I wasn’t making much progress. She asked, ‘Can I try?’ I said sure, so I handed her a tablet and she sat there with a pencil and about 10 or 15 minutes later she handed it back to me and said, ‘How’s this?’ I could instantly tell it was perfect. I had to do a litle bit of tweaking to refine it ever so slightly but essentially it was there and she had sketched it out in 15 minutes. So that design is Janet’s design and we have done hundreds and hundreds of Maple Blossoms. People really love their Maple Blossoms.
Tere is an interesting additional part to that story. A number of years ago, before the Kruger Brothers moved to the United States, we had the opportunity to go to Switzerland to go visit them. We had a few days in Italy and Jens said we should be sure to go to Milano and see the Cathedral that was designed by Leonardo Da Vinci and took 300 years to build. It was incredibly spectacular. We were walking around inside in the main part of the Cathedral and it has this beautiful inlaid marble floor and I started looking at the design in the floor. It was a repetitive combination of 3 shapes. We were blown away. It was the exact 3 shapes on the Maple Blossom. Not just similar, but exactly the same shapes. Tat entire Cathedral is in a repetitive patern of the 3 shapes in the Maple Blossom. Maybe in a previous life Janet was a marble stone cuter and worked on that floor. It is a classic design.” Greg Deering
