Old Tyme Wonder
™
“It must be said that the Old Tyme Wonder looks beautiful. Te deep stain and durable and elegant satin finish, and the atention to detail in the metal and wood work are superb. However, these looks are not a substitute for the instruments first rate quality. Te banjo
is very comfortable and responsive, and the sound of it has warmed considerably in the short time I have been playing it. I have already had an audience member comment on “the mellowest and most gentle banjo sound I have ever heard” – at a summer festival this week. It is
clearly made to the highest standards, and with thought given foremost to the practicalities of playing: the neck is smooth and shaped in an ideal way (not as chunky as my vintage Vega, which is a distinct improvement), the finish is subtle to the touch, the strings are liſted from the head so as to allow plenty of room for frailing, and the famous “scoop” is certainly an asset to the banjos versatility of sound.
It is indeed very versatile. I have of course been playing it in my usual frailed style but it responds well to fingerstyle playing, and all the other oddities I am developing! Te old tyme wonder feels to me like an
instrument which is built to sound (rather than to look), and enjoys playing. I am not having to work hard to coax sound from it – it is quite the easiest of my banjos to play, which in most show situations is of course an advantage! -Mat Martin Manchester, MI
