Orlando-July 2009-They came early and stood in a long
line just to get in the door, once on the show floor they came
in droves and never let up until they were told they must leave.
Many classes were filled with excited students eager to take new,
exciting, and different classes that weren’t available in their area.
Some students traveled thousands of miles just to take a class.
Those of you who were in Orlando July 27-30 know I’m not
talking about the CHA Show for retailers and manufacturers.
What I am talking about is the CHA Craft Super Show that was
held the two days following the trade show. No doubt you’ve
heard about the CHA Consumer Show at some point in the
last year. Early on at the CHA 2008 Chicago CHA show the
complaints and rumors started to fly. The show was going to
be moved from Chicago and a consumer show would follow.
Several retailers I spoke to in Chicago felt that they were being
bypassed completely and weren’t happy about the change of
location. I wasn’t surprised they were unhappy it’s a reality that
most people don’t do change well, myself included.
Was the attendance down at the Orlando CHA Show because
of the controversy or because of the economy? While I’ve been
attending the show for only the last three years it was obvious to
me that the attendance was down from the preceding shows.
