Mixed up carnival chaos from
Sheffi eld’s hyperactive
party-starter
Delirious ragga chants, fi lthy bassline surges,
clattering steel drums, tribal funky rhythms and mad
dancehall bleeps, the carnival sound of Toddla T has
already smashed fl oors in London, Miami, Berlin
and beyond. Now it’s Ibiza’s turn with gigs at Eden
for Reclaim The Dancefl oor and also at Pete Tong’s
Wonderland.
Initially growing up on a diet of UK garage, hip-hop
and r&b before fi nding dancehall and what he calls
“the clangy Sheffi eld electronic sound”, the White Isle
rite of passage never appealed to a young Toddla but
his overloaded enthusiasm for the party means he’s
not letting his late arrival hold him back.
“It’s going to be mash-up, mash-up, mash-up!” he
rattles.
A cultural melting pot every bit as mixed up as his
native Sheffi eld, Toddla T is like a one-man Basement
Jaxx smashed through a fast forward iPod shuffl e of
grime, bassline and drum & bass with his recent debut
LP ‘Skanky Skanky’ featuring collaborations with
Roots Manuva, Hot Chip and Tinchy Stryder.
Just don’t expect him to bend his style for the island.
“Nah, nah, nah... fuck that,” he jokes. “Maybe things
will get a bit more summery. Maybe I’ll get a bit more
funky and tropical sounding rather going down into
dark basslines tunes but I’ll just do what I do.”
siempre hago”.
